Call & Response: A Betting Shop
A Co-operation of brut and Kunsthalle Exnergasse
In his Essay Upon Projects from 1967, Daniel Defoe pronounced the age of projects, the “projecting age”: Suddenly, the future appeared open and malleable, everybody was doing projects so large a scale that they were destined to fail, and wagers were made everywhere from the stock markets to cafés.
Along these lines, geheimagentur initiates the two-part project Call and Response together with brut and Kunsthalle Exnergasse, which starts as a lecture performance at Exnergasse and ends on the second day as a betting shop at the brut bar. Towards the end of the first day, the audience is called upon to place bets that will be decided within the 24 hours to come. On the following night, the results are announced at the brut bar, the winnings paid out – there shall be drinks, tunes and cash.
geheimagentur is a loose collective from Hamburg. Their performances go beyond the limits of symbolic politics and allow an alternative reality to emerge on a small scale instead of affirming the old world by gestures of criticism. Previous works in which the collective has proven how well they are capable to achieve this include Bank of Burning Money and Alibi-Agentur. www.geheimagentur.net
